Makadamia Nuts for Parrots

Recommended Macadamia Nut Quantity for Parrots (Per Week)

Macadamia nuts are often regarded as a premium treat in aviculture. While highly palatable and energy-dense, they are also extremely high in fat. For this reason, macadamias should never form part of a parrot’s daily diet and should be offered sparingly and with intention, primarily as a treat, training reward, or enrichment item.

When fed correctly, macadamia nuts can be enjoyed safely by parrots of all sizes.

Small Birds

Budgies, Lovebirds, Parrotlets, Cockatiels, Bourkes, and small conures (such as Green-cheeked Conures)

Small parrots require only a very limited amount due to their size and metabolic rate.
Recommended quantity:

  • ½ macadamia nut, once or twice per week
  • Alternatively, a very small shaved piece per feeding session

Even small amounts provide a significant fat intake for these species.

Medium Birds

Ringneck Parakeets, Quakers (Monks), Alexandrines, Sun and Jendaya Conures, Princess of Wales Parakeets, Rosellas, Senegal and Jardine’s Parrots

Medium-sized parrots can tolerate slightly more, but moderation remains essential.
Recommended quantity:

  • ½ to 1 macadamia nut, once or twice per week

Splitting the nut into smaller portions is encouraged, particularly when using it as a reward.

Large Birds

African Greys, Amazons, Cockatoos, Eclectus Parrots, and Macaws

Larger parrots have higher energy requirements, but they are also prone to weight-related and liver issues when fed excessive fats.
Recommended quantity:

  • 1–2 whole macadamia nuts per week
  • Ideally split over two separate days

This allows enjoyment without overwhelming the bird’s nutritional balance.

Important Notes for All Parrots

  • Only offer plain, unsalted, unroasted macadamia nuts.
  • Macadamias should never be fed daily. Excessive fat intake may contribute to fatty liver disease, obesity, lipomas, and digestive imbalance.
  • Eclectus parrots are particularly sensitive to rich, high-fat foods; macadamias should be offered very sparingly to this species.
  • Always break nuts into smaller pieces and use them mainly for training, bonding, or enrichment, rather than free feeding.

In summary: macadamia nuts can be a valuable high-reward treat when used correctly, but restraint is key. A balanced diet should always remain the foundation of good parrot health, with treats enhancing—not replacing—proper nutrition.
